West London Buddhist Centre – Speculative Website Redesign
Self-initiated concept for portfolio purposes. I am not affiliated with West London Buddhist Centre.
Project Overview
The West London Buddhist Centre is a community-focused organization offering meditation, mindfulness, yoga, and Buddhist teachings accessible to people from all backgrounds, grounded in the Triratna Buddhist tradition.
This redesign concept explores how the homepage could be enhanced to better highlight key offerings and improve overall navigation. While the original homepage conveyed warmth and sincerity, several opportunities for increased user engagement were identified:
Making key event promotions more prominent to attract greater attention.
Addressing layout constraints, such as limited width and muted visuals, that reduce impact.
Reorganising the navigation menu for clearer access to important site sections.
The Solution
The homepage was thoughtfully reimagined to create a more inviting and user-friendly experience. A vibrant hero section featuring a clear call-to-action encourages first-time visitors to explore the Centre.
Significant events, such as Triratna Day, are now highlighted with dedicated banners linking directly to detailed information. The navigation menu was streamlined into dropdowns, grouping related topics and reducing the need for excessive scrolling.
The "Upcoming Events" section was expanded across the page width, with bold imagery and clear links to enhance visibility. These enhancements aim to improve mobile responsiveness, foster trust through dedicated sections for teacher bios and the Centre's story, and provide clarity on offerings, ensuring visitors can easily find events suited to their interests.
Expected Impact
Increased visibility of events
Clear CTAs and featured event banners make it easier for visitors to notice and access event details.
First section after the Hero (meditation, retreats, Sangha etc) encourages immediate interest.
Better mobile experience
A responsive, easy-to-navigate homepage helps users on phones or tablets sign up quickly—important for walk-ins or people hearing about the event via word of mouth or social media.
Enhanced trust and credibility
Separate sections for teacher bios and the story behind the centre are moved to specific pages. Creates a deeper sense of trust and connection.
Improved clarity around offerings
A cleaner layout helps people understand what’s on offer, when, and for whom (e.g., beginners vs. experienced practitioners).
Filters or sections by event type (meditation, talks, workshops) can reduce overwhelm and increase the chance of finding a suitable event.
